Baltimore City Directories online

Approximately seventy digitized Baltimore City directories from the early 1800s to the 1920s, made available by the Special Collections Department of the University of Maryland.  While not every directory is available, this is a great place to start.  Can be viewed online or downloaded in .pdf or e-reader formats.

Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet-Maryland

Categorized and cross-referenced index to genealogical resources online.  There are over 30 categories, with links to almost 2000 websites, for genealogical research in Maryland.

FamilySearch

This site, maintained by the Church of Latter-Day Saints, offers family history researchers free access to records, resources and services.

Find A Grave

This is a free searchable database of cemeteries and graves.  Usually provides birth and death dates and a picture of the tombstone.  May give obituaries, names of family members and links to their information in Find A Grave.

MDGenWeb

The USGenWeb Project consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide websites for genealogical research in every county within each state in the United States.  The Maryland site provides access to transcriptions of numerous marriage bonds, wills, and other public documents, as well as other links to resources unique to Maryland genealogical research.

RootsWeb Surname List

Useful for exchanging family research with other genealogists. There are more than 1 million surnames submitted, with about 700 additional names being added each day according to RootsWeb.

Social Security Death Index

Available through FamilySearch, this index contains the records of deceased persons who possessed Social Security numbers and whose death has been reported to the SSA. Note:  Due to restrictions enacted in March 2014, new entries to publicly available versions of the Social Security Death Index will not be available for three years beginning on the date of an individual’s death
